Prepare for your Scouting adventure
Welcome to the Charnwood District Training Site
Welcome to Charnwood District Scouts Adult Training!

Adult training is designed to support you as a volunteer to get the most out of your role and to support adults in Scouting, The adult training scheme provides a comprehensive programme of training to build on existing skills and knowledge and to develop new skills.
The training and development opportunities available vary according to your role.
There are some modules that everyone has to complete, these are the Getting Started modules
Modules 1, 2, 3 and GDPR.
After that the training varies, but for most of you it will be modules 5 to 19, which are for a scout leader appointment.
Manager and Supporter roles require Module 4 and then the LSM modules which involves independent learning and upto 4 days of training for 3 separate courses.
Training varies from practical skills such as first aid, planning exciting balanced programmes and basic scouting skills, through to administration, child protection and working with our young people.
New trainees are encouraged to attend a training course for Getting Started, 12a & 12b which cover delivering a diverse and fun programme and 17 practical skills like pioneering, navigation skills, backwood cooking to name a few. As a District, each year we offer two Getting Started training days, one Programme Planning day and a practical skills day. Course training dates are available on the poster section of this website.
All Groups within the District have a Training Advisor, these can be found on the “The Team” page of this site. This provides contact information for your Groups advisor.
There is also a comprehensive training programme for all Young Leaders which is overseen by Sandy Taylor.
Bill Yeomans oversees the Nights Away Training so that you can take the young people on camps. His contact
details are available within The Team page.
You should find everything here to help you whether you are just starting out in a new role, a leader looking for information about ongoing learning or as a training adviser.
On behalf of our young people, thank-you so much for taking on a role with Charnwood District Scouts.

How the Adult training scheme works The Scouting Adult training scheme is made up of 38 modules that cover the development areas required to be a leader in Scouting. It is a national scheme so any training completed is recognised across the country. There are 2 main parts to each of these modules: Learning and Validation.
Learning provides the opportunity to gain or improve the knowledge and skills you need to be a leader and be successful in your role. The methods used for learning vary and you can pick how you want to complete the learning to fit with your individual learning style and the knowledge you may already have. In Charnwood we aim to make learning fun, informative and to meet the individuals’ needs
This is the process of demonstrating to your Training Adviser (TA) that you can meet the objectives of the module. This can be done through a variety of methods from your TA observing you in your Scouting role, providing evidence such as a witness testimony, or discussing with your TA. Evidence should be something you do as part of your role in Scouting and should not generate any extra work.
What happens next ? Once you have successfully completed all the relevant learning and validation you will be awarded your wood badge for your role. As this is a national scheme these are recognised across the country.
Ongoing Mandatory Learning All leaders need to keep the following up to date to ensure we keep the young people safe and know what to do in case of an incident.
First Aid: minimum first response, renewal every 3 years
Safety: renewal every 5 years
